About Dr Daniel J Farrugia MD PhD FACS

Dr. Farrugia is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the Society of Surgical Oncology.

Dr. Farrugia has trained in two of the leading institutions in the world for breast cancer. He presents and attends the foremost international conferences for breast cancer, therefore staying abreast of the latest research and management guidelines for breast cancer and breast disease. He also completed a Ph.D. focusing on inherited breast cancer at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Farrugia prides himself on achieving the optimal cosmetic result in breast surgery. Whenever possible and safe, he places incisions in hidden areas such as under the fold of the breast, around the areola, or in the arm pit for an enhanced cosmetic result.


Besides being a fellowship-trained breast surgeon and board-certified general surgeon, Dr. Farrugia performed cutting edge research in inherited breast cancer at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. During this time, he discovered novel techniques to determine which mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 breast cancer susceptibility genes cause breast cancer and which are harmless. For this work, he received an award from the United States Department of Defense that funded his research. Dr. Farrugia’s research has helped breast surgeons, genetic counselors and researchers around the world identify harmful mutations in genes that cause breast cancer.

Dr. Farrugia has published in the world’s leading scientific journals including Nature, Cancer Research, Human Mutation, Oncogene, Journal of Oncology Practice, and Modern Pathology. Dr. Farrugia’s breast cancer research has been cited over a thousand times in the medical literature.

Dr. Farrugia has presented his research in breast cancer at several international medical conferences. In 2016, he received a MERIT Award from the Conquer Cancer Foundation of American Society of Clinical Oncology for one of his projects that developed an inexpensive technique to determine the risks of breast cancer recurrence after surgery following neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
